The history of leatherwork in Ubrique dates back to the golden age of al-Andalus, when skilled Arab and Jewish artisans collaborated to perfect leather craftsmanship. Generations later, Castilian settlers, Mudejars and Genoese merchants joined them, bringing together traditions that would make Ubrique a famous and unique town.
Families worked side by side, passing on techniques and art from father to son, creating unique pieces. By the end of the 19th century, the leather of Ubrique was famous throughout Europe, embodying a tradition of craftsmanship that remains today a hallmark of luxury and excellence.
Generations of craftsmen have passed down the trade, creating an industry in which almost everyone plays a role: some make the leather goods, others develop the adhesives, and still others build and maintain the specialized machines.
